I am a concert person – that’s a fact.
I went to my first concert (Hilary Duff – Most Wanted Tour) when I was 6 years old, and after that I was hooked!
There’s nothing quite like seeing music live. I know – it sounds snooty – but it’s true! The energy of a room when you’re all connected to the music, and just having a great time is one of the best ways to hear your favorite songs!
I’ve told you before, and I’ll tell you again I’m sure, but I love music! And being in a concert, not just hearing the music, but really feeling it. Singing/screaming along to a song that you love with thousands of people that love it, too – you can understand why so many people talk about a performance high.
Each concert you go to is different – and that’s another thing that’s so special about it! Every once in a while, you’ll end up in the middle of a rough group, like people who get too drunk, or people that have bad attitudes. But for the most part, everyone is so excited to be there, to share this experience. You talk about how far you’ve travelled, and what tour shirt you bought – you end up making friends with complete strangers.
I feel like being a ‘concert person’ has become a little bit of my personality, and it’s because I’ve gotten to see some pretty awesome shows! I’d love to tell you about all of them, but neither of us has that kind of time.
So instead, I’ll tell you about a few special ones.
In 2010, I’d been watching Taylor Swift tickets for the Fearless tour for months, but it hadn’t worked out yet. Then one week before the concert in my state, I was back scrolling through Ticketmaster, and found 3 tickets at the top of the arena for a really great price! My Mom and Dad (who are the coolest, by the way) agreed that we could go.
So on a Wednesday in March, after school, my Mom, sister, and I went to see Taylor Swift for the first time! We sang along to every word, and got t-shirts and a program. I wore my hair in ringlet curls, because that was clearly the vibe. Anyone who went will tell you, the Fearless era was something special!
In 2017, my sister and I went to see Taylor again, this time driving two states away. We saw Taylor’s mom 3 rows in front of us! (And missed all of ‘Gorgeous’ trying to get her attention)
Another special one was seeing the Jonas Brothers in 2019. This was our 3rd time seeing the Jonas Brothers, but after the break-up and getting back together – this time meant so much more to all of us.
But seeing them was extra special for another reason. You see, my sister and I have been to enough concerts that we kind of have our system down.
We pick an outfit weeks before – something that matches the vibe of the concert. On the day of we get ready, and take pictures. Then we get to the concert early enough to be there when the doors open and get our merch.
For this particular concert, we forgot the tickets at home and had to go back and get them. (We have NEVER forgotten the tickets before!) When we got to the venue, it was really hot and the doors wouldn’t be open for a while, so I said we should wait to get out of the car. My sister felt better being in the line, so we went ahead and got out.
Then…I saw the line on the other side of the building was way shorter, and said we should go over there. My sister wasn’t sure, but agreed to go. When we got there, we were able to wait inside where there were about 10 other people.
Two guys working for the tour came out to our line, and asked us if we would like to meet the Jonas Brothers!! What?!? Turns out they had a set number of meet and greet passes to give out each night, and we got in the right line at the exact right time!
It was the most serendipitous moment ever, and so many things happened to make that fall into the place!
We got to hug them and talk about what fan song they should sing on the B stage that night. We took our picture, and in case you were wondering – they smell really good!
Then we went out to scream along with the rest of the crowd to every song they played. We’d never been a part of such a connected crowd before! Everyone was so excited to be back with them, singing along to our favorite childhood songs after so many years. That kind of magic is hard to replicate.
We’ve won tickets to concerts (play the radio show games people!) We saw Rick Springfield and Luke Bryan that way! We’ve even won meet and greets that way – Chris Lane and Dustin Lynch! We’ve been to concerts in big venues and small. Bought cheap tickets, and paid more than we probably should have (But hey! You only live once!)
And this weekend, we were back at it again.
We went and saw Harry Styles: Love on Tour, and WOW! It was such a good show!
Concerts in the round don’t always work, but Harry brings the whole arena to life! He’s everywhere, connecting with everyone. Dancing and reading signs – giving relationship advice, and making jokes.
The whole crowd sparkles – literally. In case you missed the memo, going to a Harry Styles concert involves a lot of sequins and glitter.
When Harry goes out on the stage, it’s joyful!
The whole time, watching him perform and singing along, I kept thinking about the Fine Line Apple Music interview – “Don’t worry about it. Everything’s gonna be fine.” Harry told Zane Lowe. And being at that concert felt like that.
Don’t worry about the other stuff, just be here in this moment.
And it was the kind of show that you’re so into that it flies by! Before we knew it, Harry was already to the encore, singing about gravity holding him back.
My only real complaint is that he didn’t sing ‘Medicine’ at our show, but I guess I’ll get over it. 🙂 Hearing him ‘yeehaw’ was pretty special, too.
And sidenote – so many venues are now requiring clear bags and purses. I got this one from Amazon for the Harry Styles concert and it worked perfectly! It held everything I needed for the night, with plenty of room to spare! And it comes in so many cute colors!
